Sewing Project: DogTooth Dress

Image from style.com

This was the inspiration that I mentioned for a few days ago. I said I was going to try and make something inspired by it. Well below is the image I've been making using GIMP. I think it'll turn out well.

The material I bought is a woven wool and because my stupid sewing machines aren't working right I'm going to have to sew it completely by hand. Including the finishing! Hopefully I won't go insane. The pink bit at the waist is pleated ribbon. I got the idea from the fantastic Violet and she gave me permission to post some pictures.

I think the ribbon will look lovely at the waist but I'll pin it before I sew it just in case it doesn't work out. I'll update you when I get some more done.

Civalry isn't dead... it's just been locked away

  Image from: http://artofmanliness.com/2009/03/01/the-writing-on-the-door/

Today I was thinking about women complaining that civalry is dead, but maybe it's our fault as women. I'll give a few examples from my life and then bring up why it might be our fault.

Whenever Allan and I go to the supermarket, for either of our places, we always end up with more than one person can carry in one trip. So we both end up carrying tons of bags, him trying to take more because he doesn't want me to struggle, and I try to take more because I don't want him to carry too much, and we end up struggling with carrying too much. Anyway this links into the chivalry thing, because he wants to help me by carrying more, but I don't let him.

This morning I had to carry a full suitcase into Tel-Aviv because I wanted to get rid of lots of clothes (lots and lots), and when I tried to get on the bus a man asked to help me. I kept telling him I could do it myself but he did help me in the end. And I can't believe that the thought he might run away with the case as I got on the bus came up in my head. Firstly, where would he run? It weighed a ton (25 kilos actually but that's still a lot). Secondly, have we actually become so jaded that we are suspicious of anyone that may want to help?

I want to believe in the good of man, but how can we when we don't have little things anymore. Doors aren't held open, for anyone, not just by men for women. One woman shut the door in my face at a shop not long ago, and she knew I was behind her (in the UK). Please and Thank You have been forgotten by lots of people. And if you bump into someone you look at them with distaste blaming them even if it is your fault.

Well I want to change things, and I hope some of you vintage/retro guys and gals will help me out. Here is what I think we should do:
  1. Say "Good Morning" to strangers, just to make them smile.
  2. Say "Excuse me" if you bump into someone, want to get past them or want to ask someone something.
  3. Saying "Please" and "Thank You" is compulsory.
  4. Help someone out, even if it's just giving a hand to someone in your building or one of your neighbours with carrying thier shopping.
  5. Donate, volunteer or help a charity in some way.
  6. Stop being suspicious of everyone and everything and let someone help you.

Gals: Elegant Woman

Let me know what you think can be done, and what should be done to change things. Also if you are a chivalrous guy or gal let me know!

Spring/Summer 2010 Inspiration

I just did a clear out of my summer clothes, since in the summer I couldn't bring myself to get rid of them. And now I need to look at what I will be wearing in the Spring/Summer. From what I can tell there where alot of vintage influences on the designers and girly is back!!! Hooray!

One thing that I have an issue with is the hemlines being so high, but it's fashion, and each to their own.

Anna Sui

I love the first look because it's preppy and looks clean, and cute all at once. The second look is the perfect compromise for work. It's cute and it's a simple suit, with the girly blouse underneath.

Chanel

It's no surprise that Chanel inspires me as per usual. The white dress is classic and the ruffles give it the girly edge that I'm looking for in most clothes. The red ensemble seems like it's taken the 80's look from this season and taken it back to the inspiration for the 80's: the 40's. I like that it could be worn for work, and I'm drawn to reds anyway.

The first look screams Chanel to me. It's the summer interpretation of their current collection. The second dress is the way I think I'll wear the sheer look, in a 50's inspired dress, with slips underneath.

The first one here reminds me of the 60's, because of the clean lines and the sharp contrast between the black and the white. The blue dress, like the white one shown earlier is girly, and is the perfect colour for the spring.

This is the last of the Chanel inspirations, I love dogtooth this season and love that it is going to be carried on to next season. I'm planning on making a dress inspired by this, but with a bit more of a vintage cut (length).

Dior

Dior on the other hand looked back to the 30's and 40's for inspiration. The silhouettes, hair, make-up and colours are all reminiscent of the 40's.

Moschino Cheap & Chic

Graphic prints dominated at Mochino Cheap & Chic, and it looks like they took a lot of inspiration from the 60's. I love the polka dots in these looks and the ruffles on the dress.

I'm not usually a fan of maxi dresses but I love the print on this first dress, and the mix of the colours. Personally I'd like to see something like this as a shift dress that stops on the knee or just above it. The second look is just adorable and I couldn't help but love the peter pan collar.

Vivienne Westwood - Red Label

Two very different looks here, but the first one follows the girly, pink look that carries on from the other collections that has inspired me. The second look I like the jacket and waistcoat. I love the tailoring and the cool work look that it could be a part of.

I hope you like all of this, what is inspiring you for spring/summer?

Vintage Shop Review: Tiger Lily 's Boutique (Reading, UK)

I found out about this shop from my Mum, who goes in there to look for stuff for me. She's been talking to me about the lovely woman in there and she said she thought I would like it... And she was right.

The shop stock reproduction, as well as vintage from the 40's to the 80's. She also supports local artists by selling some of their crafts. I bought myself a 50's dress in here, and a 60's one for myself that is going to go into the shop. If I hadn't of been on such a tight budget I would have gone absolutely insane in here.

My mum got herself a lovely 60's suit that I can't wait to steal from her. The prices are reasonable for vintage, depending on the item, and the prices for reproduction vintage are pretty much the same as the retailers. She has lots of beautiful swing dresses and skirts.

All in all I loved going into this shop, and the owners are very very nice and friendly.

Etsy Shop Feature Soobird

This is the start of a new feature where I write about Etsy Shops, I am recieving nothing for this and am only writing about shops that I like.

I bought a hair clip from Soobird and it arrived yesterday it was beautifully wrapped:

Soobird, sells handmade accessories made out of playing cards and feathers. I first found out about her while in the UK and I saw some of her fascinators in the vintage shop, Tiger Lily Boutique in Reading (review coming soon). I always prefer buying directly from the artist so I asked if I could find her on the web and was told she was on Etsy.

Below are some of my favorite items (other than the clip I bought obviously):

These images are from her website www.soobird.com she is happy to make custom items, just approach her.

Personally I love how innovative the designs are and am considering buying some more hair clips from her. Please take a look at her shop on Etsy and her website.

I'll take pictures of my clip soon!!!

Links à la Mode: The IFB Weekly Round-up

There's one of my posts on here this week!!! Wooo Hooo

Food for Thought

Edited by Ashe Mischief

This is my first time editing since I wrote Good Cop/Bad Cop: Participating in Links a la Mode.  Thank you all so much for making this my most pleasurable experience in editing yet!

I’m not sure if it’s because American Thanksgiving is a week away, or because the blogosphere is ablaze with Kate Mosses’ unforgettable quote, “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels,” but either way, I’ve got food on my mind. This week, you brought me the best kind of food–rich, decadent, and 100% calorie-free!  That’s right–you delivered highly thoughtful posts on fashion, fashion blogging & communities, and more.

On a personal note, ferOHHHsh has asked that we share her post about her close friend’s near-fatal accident.  I believe that the fashion community is one of surprising strength, dignity, caring and compassion, and that it was worth sharing.  We’re sending your friend speedy thoughts for a wonderful recovery!

Early New Years Resolutions

I know it's not new year but I think that if I needed to wait until 1st January 2010 to say this I wouldn't be serious about any of them. So I've listed my resolutions/to do list in order of time frame: the next week, the next month, the next 3 months, the next year.

The Next Week
  • Get the house tidy, and purge books, knicknacks, clothes, shoes... pretty much everything that is taking up space and isn't needed.
  • Iron my whole wardrobe - there are some things I can't wear because they haven't been ironed since I last wore them.
  • Get caught up with my Degree (I've WAYYYY behind)
The Next Month
  • Get close to finishing this module of my degree!
  • Keep the house tidy
  • No-Buy month mark 2!!!! (More on this later/tomorrow)
  • Find a work, study, blog, life balance. I've been a bit preoccupied with the blog recently.
  • Stop biting my nails (more on that later)
  • Start looking after myself (more on that later)
The Next Three Months
  • Have a routine/schedule in place that's feasible
  • Finish all current crafting projects (more on that later)
  • Nearly finish my second module for this year
The Next Year
  • Pass my two exams for this year
  • Achieve perfection in my wardrobe
  • Find the peace/balance that people talk about
  • Figure out a 5 year plan
  • Get some savings (this is on the list every year but I haven't managed it yet)
I know this is a wierd post for me, but I need this here to keep me focused. What are your guys goals?
